Ms Kilkenny’s Class made a special type of slime called ‘Oobleck’.  It is known as a non-Newtonian fluid which means it has both the properties of a solid and a liquid. This substance’s funny name comes from a Dr. Seuss book called ‘Bartholomew and the Oobleck’. They made it using corn flour and water and a little bit of food colouring. Mrs Desmond’s Class have been busy decorating their classroom with spooky Halloween art. They made spooky ghosts, bats, pumpkins and haunted houses. They also recently did some lovely leaf rubbings and printings when they were exploring autumn.

The first round of the Letterkenn Primary Debating League got off to a very exciting start when Scoil Mhuire hosted Woodland N.S debating the Motion “ Social Media is a bad influence on children”. Everyone was given a very warm welcome by Chairperson Hannah before the speakers took to the floor.

Scoil Mhuire who were proposing the motion argued that social media contributes to poor mental Health and addiction and how young people have become slaves to social Media. They also outlined how children may not be aware of who they are talking to online and how social media has contributed to cyberbullying. Children are now carrying the bully around in their pockets.

Woodland N.S who were opposing the motion counter argued that bullying was around long before Social Media and that it was up to individuals and parents to monitor social media use. Woodland N.S   also argued that social media is a fantastic tool for learning and for staying in touch with friends and relatives abroad. Its ability to raise awareness around issues such as charities was also mentioned.

After a hard fought crossfire round with both sides putting forward excellent arguments and rebuttals the debate was opened to the floor and both schools had a lively debate while the adjudicators made their decision

Scoil Mhuire were announced winners after a very close competition. Congratulations to all those involved.

It is Anti-Bullying week in Woodland N.S and the children have been learning all about the types of bullying and what to do if they are bullied. The senior classes had a talk about Cyber-Bullying from the Youth Council. They have also acted out dramas and made posters about bullying.
